Homeopathy

Homeopathy is a system of medical therapy that uses very small doses of medicines, or remedies, to stimulate the body’s ability to heal itself.  These remedies are prepared from substances found in nature (mostly from plant, mineral, or animal sources).  Homeopathy, however, should not be confused with herbal medicine.  The two systems are very different.  Herbal medicine uses crude quantities of botanical substances in much the same way that allopathic medicine uses pharmaceutical drugs.  In contrast, homeopathy uses ultra dilute “micro” doses in which the original substance is diluted in liquid repeatedly and vigorously shaken with each dilution (ie. potentized).  As unusual as this sounds, these small doses of remedies are very effective when used properly.  Also, because the remedies are so diluted, they are extremely safe and gentle.  A homeopathic remedy doesn’t even contain any molecules of the original substance, yet medicinal qualities are retained.

In homeopathy it is not the disease that is treated, but the person who is sick.  A homeopath looks at the whole person and their unique expression of symptoms, and in turn matches the most appropriate remedy for that individual.

It works on the principle of “like cures like” – that is, a substance that would cause symptoms in a healthy person is used to cure those same symptoms in illness. For example, one remedy which might be used in a person suffering from insomnia is coffea, a remedy made from coffee beans.

How Does Homeopathy Support Pregnancy, Childbirth and Mother and Baby in the Postpartum stage?

Homeopathy has a great deal to offer a pregnant woman, during both pregnancy and delivery.  Since homeopathic remedies are devoid of all chemical toxicity, they can be used safely during pregnancy as there is no fear of it interfering with the baby.  Physical and emotional changes during pregnancy may cause health problems such as nausea, mild urinary problems, diarrhea, constipation, heartburn, anemia, varicose veins, backache, cramps, thrush or emotional distress.  All of these issues may be helped by professional homeopathic treatment.  A mother-to-be need not suffer from the minor discomforts of pregnancy.  By stimulating your vitality in pregnancy, homeopathic treatment can benefit your baby, and by staying as healthy as possible during pregnancy, you are giving your baby the ideal conditions in which to thrive.

Homeopathic remedies do not reduce labour pains themselves but they can speed up a labour that is losing momentum and help with basic problems such as exhaustion or backache during labour.  They also help a woman to cope better emotionally, and are wonderful for healing after childbirth.
